Danae
The story of Danaë from Greek mythology served as the point of departure for this work. Traditionally, Danaë has been depicted as a fixed figure within a single scene—most often at the moment Zeus enters her chamber as golden rain. Rather than repeating this canonical composition, I sought to explore alternative ways of approaching a single figure and her emotions through visual fragmentation, as suggested by the exhibition title Nu-Frame. In this work, Danaë is considered through six emotional states surrounding a single event. These states are further condensed into three characters distinguished by pink (red-toned), blue, and yellow hair. This approach draws from conventions in Japanese manga, where external features—particularly hair color—often function as indicators of a character’s role or disposition. The three figures appear visually similar, yet embody subtly different emotional conditions. The three largest depictions of Danaë are each divided into three irregular canvases. These divisions sometimes evoke the diagonal framing of comic panels, while at other moments they appear as lines that traverse multiple surfaces, suggesting a larger, incomplete image. When assembled, the canvases form a single composition, yet certain elements remain deliberately disjointed. Through this structure, the figure resists being fixed into a singular image and instead unfolds across multiple viewpoints. The project extends beyond these paintings into a range of related works: drawings that explore variations in pose and expression; abstract paintings isolating background effects from the larger compositions; modified canvases resembling comic panels that focus solely on Danaë’s face; and further reductions of these images into flat fields of color. Together, these works approach the same figure and narrative from varying distances and formats. Ultimately, the work does not present Danaë as a fixed image, but allows emotion and interpretation to remain fluid through processes of division and recombination. The figure functions less as an object to be explained than as a relationship continually constructed and transformed within the frame.
